  • How much stuff can fit in a 10x10 storage unit?

A 10x10 storage unit provides 100 square feet of floor space, comparable to a small bedroom or half of a standard one-car garage. With typical ceilings around 8 feet high, this offers approximately 800 cubic feet of storage capacity.

This size unit can typically accommodate the contents of two bedrooms or a large family room. Common items that fit include:

    • Furniture such as sofas, chairs, desks, dressers, and bookshelves
    • Large appliances like refrigerators, washers, and dryers
    • Multiple boxes containing household items or personal belongings

If you're storing boxes exclusively, a 10x10 unit can hold approximately 100 medium-sized boxes when stacked efficiently.

However, it's important to note that a 10x10 unit is generally not suitable for storing most vehicles, as even compact cars typically require a larger space.

  • What size storage unit do I need for a 4 bedroom house?

For a 4-bedroom house, you'll typically need a 10x20 to 10x30 storage unit, depending on how much you plan to store.

Here’s a quick breakdown to help you decide:

    • 10x20 unit (200 sq. ft.): Ideal if you’re storing the contents of a 4-bedroom house without major appliances or with minimal furniture. This is about the size of a standard one-car garage.
    • 10x25 unit (250 sq. ft.): A better fit if you’re including larger items like sofas, dining sets, and multiple beds, along with some appliances and boxes.
    • 10x30 unit (300 sq. ft.): Best suited for fully furnished 4-bedroom homes with appliances, patio furniture, garage items, and dozens of boxes. This size offers about the same space as a standard 1.5-car garage.

Pro tip: If you're unsure, it's better to size up slightly to ensure easy access and avoid stacking everything too tightly. You can also refer to our Size Guide to get a better idea of the size you need.

  • Will a queen mattress fit in a 5x5 storage unit?

A queen mattress typically will not fit in a 5x5 storage unit.

A standard queen mattress measures about 60 inches wide by 80 inches long, while a 5x5 storage unit offers 25 square feet of floor space—about the size of a small walk-in closet. The unit is only 60 inches deep, so the length of the mattress (80 inches) is too long to lie flat.

However, if the unit has tall ceilings (8+ feet) and the mattress can be safely stored on its side, it might fit vertically—but it would be a tight squeeze, and you likely wouldn’t have space for much else.

Recommendation: For storing a queen mattress along with other items, it’s best to go with at least a 5x10 storage unit, which provides the extra length and flexibility you need.
